Manitowoc Garden Walk is July 20 at six local gardens, and more news in brief

MANITOWOC – Master Gardeners of Manitowoc County will present its 2024 Garden Walk from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 20, rain or shine.

Tickets can be purchased the day of the event at any of the participating gardens. They’re $12 each. One ticket allows entrance to each garden. Children should be at least 10 years old to attend, a news release said.

The following six gardens and their themes will be featured:

  • No. 1, Barnard Garden, 540 S. 34th St., “A Cottage Garden”;

  • No. 2, Cavanaugh Garden, 4033 Springhill Drive, “Through The Years”;

  • No. 3, Siewert Garden, 845 N. Rapids Road, “Wildflowers and More”;

  • No. 4, Erdmann Garden, 1036 N. 43rd St., “Heartsong”;

  • No. 5, Steinbrenner Garden, 1205 Tanglewood Road, “Our Shade Garden”; and

  • No. 6, Greening Garden, 1465 Mailand Drive, “Expressions.”

‘Harmony Lives on the Schmitt Brothers Stage’ July 20 in Two Rivers

The community is invited to attend “Harmony Lives on the Schmitt Brothers Stage,” a family-friendly event featuring barbershop singers, food and fun in Two Rivers Central Park.

The event will run 6-7:30 p.m. July 20. Admission is free. The Clipper City Chordsmen plus the Harmony To Go, Barber Pops, Encore and Pass Da Buck quartets will perform.

During the event, community partners will offer food for purchase. Grow It Forward will sponsor a food stand with burgers, brats, hot dogs and beverages. The Washington House Museum, part of the Two Rivers Historical Society, will scoop ice cream. And Cool City Brewing Company will offer the Schmitt Brothers Barbershop Brew on tap at its restaurant.

Rahr-West announces ‘Plein Air’ exhibit, Paint Out 2024

Manitowoc’s Rahr-West Art Museum, 610 N. Eighth St., has announced the exhibition “Plein Air” by Todd Schabel. This collection of work is on loan from the artist in conjunction with the plein air painting event, Paint Out.

This year, the Rahr-West Art Museum is collaborating with the Wisconsin Maritime Museum to host Paint Out on its Rooftop Deck. Artist Todd Schabel will be one of three demonstrating artists during Paint Out.

Schabel is a contemporary realist oil painter who grew up in central Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, where he studied with the late Li Hu, who emphasized the need to learn strong drawing skills and the importance of working from life.

Schabel has received numerous plein air awards, including Best in Show at Paint Cedarburg and Bluffstrokes, Iowa, plein air events. He is represented by Gallery 1802 in La Crosse and Bell Street Gallery in La Pointe.

Schabel’s works can be viewed in the corridor of the Rahr-West Art Museum July 23-Aug. 11.

Paint Out 2024 will be 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum Rooftop Deck. The museum is at 75 Maritime Drive. Bonnita Budysz and Robert Theaker will also be demonstrating artists at Paint Out, in conjunction with their exhibit, “Water Dance,” at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum.

Paint Out Artist demonstrations are scheduled as follow Aug. 3: Robert Theaker, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; Bonnita Budysz, 2-4 p.m.; and Todd Schabel, 4-6 p.m.

‘An Evening with Frank Sinatra’ will be Two Rivers Community Band’s next concert

The next Two Rivers Community Band concert will be July 18 and entails “An Evening with Frank Sinatra.”

The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. in Central Park on Washington Street.

The program leads off with “The Star-Spangled Banner,” followed by “Theme from New York,” “Fly Me to the Moon (In Other Words),” “The Lady is a Tramp” and “Hits of the ’20s.”

“My Way” will be sung by Phil Stangel and “’S Wonderful” will be sung by Deanna Johnson.

Other numbers are “Standard Pop Favorites,” “Sidewalks of New York,” “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” “Jitterbug!” and “Charleston.”

Additional selections are “Mancini!,” “The Rifle Regiment,” “The Old Piano Roll Blues” and “Big Brass Band from Brazil.”

If it rains, the concert will be in the J.E. Hamilton Community House, 1710 W. Park St.

Red Cross plans local blood drives

American Red Cross will hold the following local blood drives:

  • July 18, 2-6 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 2426 N. Rapids Road, Manitowoc;

  • July 29, noon to 4 p.m. at Shoreline Credit Union, 4400 Calumet Ave., Manitowoc;

  • July 24, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Kiel Fire House, 99 Fremont St., Kiel; and

  • July 31, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Elks Lodge, 1807 N. Rapids Road, Manitowoc.

Registration open for Ascend Services’ cornhole tournament fundraiser

Manitowoc’s Ascend Services will hold its third annual Toss with all Your Heart Bags & Brews Cornhole Tournament fundraiser.

The event will run noon-4 p.m. Aug. 10 at Sabbatical Brewing Co., 835 S. 29th St., Manitowoc. It will feature a cornhole tournament, raffles, prizes and more. Holla on Wheels food truck will be on site. Registration is open now for the tournament and can be done on the Facebook event or website, ascendservicesinc.org.
