Marie Kondo Applies Her Decluttering Practice to Her Smartphone and Only Keeps Photos that ‘Spark Joy’
If there’s one thing Marie Kondo has taught us, it’s how to physically declutter a space. But what about the digital clutter that has a tendency to wreak havoc, specifically on your iPhone’s camera roll? Marie Kondo has a book for that (Joy at Work: Organizing Your Professional Life, due out in spring 2020), but also a genius trick for regaining control of your smartphone’s photo folder.
PureWow had the chance to chat exclusively with the organizing guru while she was in New York City to promote her brand-new children’s book, Kiki & Jax: The Life-Changing Magic of Friendship. That’s when we got her to spill about how she whittles down the digital photos she snaps.
“What I recommend is a lot of work, but I would dedicate a time to go through the photos on your smartphone all at once,” Kondo explains. “But if that’s more difficult, something that I like to do in my daily practice is, at the end of the day, I will look over the photos that I took that day and delete the ones that look similar or didn’t spark a lot of joy.” Simple, yet effective.
As for the photos that she loves? “I mark the photos that spark joy with a little heart.” (For anyone unfamiliar, hearting a photo in your phone’s camera roll typically adds it to a log of favorites, which makes it possible to curate all the best pics in one spot.) She then deletes the un-hearted photos.
If you need us, we’ll be implementing this digital (and space-saving) tactic, stat.
