Mark Ruffalo Reveals The Hulk Was Almost Killed Off in Infinity War
The Incredible Hulk almost didn’t make it out of Infinity War alive. According to actor Mark Ruffalo, a death scene was filmed for the character of Bruce Banner.
During the recent Marvel press junket, Ruffalo told Yahoo! that two possible endings were shot for his character, including one which would have seen Banner disintegrate into dust along with half of all life in the universe-and even Ruffalo wasn’t sure if he had survived until he saw the final edit in the theater.
“I didn’t know until I saw the movie,” he said. “For one take, I did disappear, and then the other one I didn’t.”
It’s possible that the Russo brothers decided to film alternate endings for Ruffalo’s character because he has a reputation, along with Spider-Man actor Tom Holland, for accidentally leaking spoilers to the fans. And they’re not above such misdirection when it comes to the Hulk, who was clearly shown fighting in Wakanda in the trailer for Infinity War, only to remain out of action after the opening titles of the actual film.
“I was pretty sure it was gonna be me,” Ruffalo added. “It’s like Survivor. It’s like, who’s gonna get kicked off the island? And I probably should’ve. … It’s like Project Runway for leakers.”
However, it’s unlikely that the film’s writers would have actually pulled the trigger on dusting Banner, as the ending to Infinity War relied on evoking a certain kind of symmetry, killing off pretty much every hero except the original six Avengers; Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Hawkeye, and Hulk himself.
The upcoming sequel, Avengers: Endgame, will focus on these core characters’ efforts to defeat Thanos with the help of newcomer Captain Marvel and the remaining survivors of The Snap. “The only thing we’ll say in that regard,” Joe Russo said at the junket, “is that there’s a reason that the original six Avengers survived.”
Avengers: Endgame will be released on April 26.
