Mark Wahlberg Explains How He Makes Time for Faith and Family Between Workouts
Mark Wahlberg sat down for an interview with Fox News recently, where he spoke about how he carves out time for both faith and family within his famous fitness routines. Wahlberg shares four children—Ella, 20, Michael, 17, Brendan, 15, and Grace, 13—with Rhea Durham, his wife of 14 years.
At age 52, Wahlberg has toned down his strenuous workout plans to focus more on recovery than building mass. As a result, he’s able to spend more time centering himself with prayer and time with his wife and kids. However, that doesn’t mean he’s sleeping in any later.
Wahlberg still rises at 2:30 a.m. to luxuriate in some "nice, quiet time" before his family wakes. Often this involves finding the prayer bench Durham bought him for a recent birthday. Here, he gets down on his "hands and my knees [to] express my gratitude, reflect, and think about the things that I should be doing."
After that, Wahlberg takes a cold plunge. It’s a ritual the Uncharted actor positively swears by. “I get in the plunge and I get in the gym, and then I come back, and I read my prayer book," he reported. After his prayers, the veteran golfer hits the course for a few holes before work.
"I like to get as much of my stuff done before the kids got to get up for school,” Wahlberg explained, “so that way I'm not taking time in the middle of the day to focus on all these other things that I need to do to be the best version of myself."
When it comes to family time, Wahlberg enjoys coaching his children in their fitness ambitions. He's trying to impart to his kin that sometimes the best exercise is slow and steady. The Family Plan star recently segued into less intense workouts to recover from "problems with [my] shoulders, knees, [and] back" incurred by making "all the mistakes possible" performing on-screen stunts.
Wahlberg wants to "share that with my kids, who now love to work out. I want to make sure that hopefully, they can avoid making some of the mistakes that I made."
Wahlberg can next be seen in the action-comedy The Family Plan, which debuts on Apple TV+ on December 15. You can check out the trailer below.
