Martha Stewart Expertly Claps Back After Ice Berg Cocktail Backlash
Martha Stewart is subtly clapping back at those who criticized her for sipping on a cocktail chilled by a chunk of ice from a natural glacier.
The infamous homemaker recently enjoyed a Zodiac Cruise, which brought her into a fjord on the east coast of Greenland, where they "captured a small iceberg" that was distributed between the passengers' drinks one evening. Stewart posted a few picturesque snapshots of the walls of ice that surrounded them on Instagram, as well as a group shot featuring the chunk of ice and all of their drinks, but many followers felt that removing ice from the wild to put into a glass of champagne amid the climate crisis was rather tone-deaf.
The 82-year-old isn't worried about the backlash, though. In fact, she's having a bit of fun with it. As seen by Fox News, Stewart took to her Instagram Stories with a shameless response, posting another photo of a mountain of ice on the water, captioned, "pleated iceberg. perfect for cocktails!" and a snapshot of herself lounging in a hot tub aboard the ship.
She also posted a link to a Washington Post article titled "Martha Stewart put an iceberg in her drink. Experts say it’s no big deal." The publication spoke with glaciologist Eric Rignot, who said that taking ice from an iceberg—which is a chunk that has already separated from a glacier and is slowly melting away at sea—isn't a big deal. “It is not like she went to a glacier and carved a piece of ice off it,” he said.
Glaciologist Ian Allison agreed, noting that the cruise ship's fossil fuel use would have a much greater impact than the ice fiasco. “Popping a bit of ice into a drink is no worse than taking a glass of water from a river,” he emphasized.
But while Rignot doesn't believe Stewart did anything harmful, he does believe, like many of her followers, that there was a missed opportunity to promote “the beauty of the place and how sad it is to know that it is melting away.”
