Martha Stewart Used a Small Iceberg to Chill Her Cocktail—and the Internet Isn’t Happy About It
Martha Stewart has become known for her occasionally outlandish social-media posts. But one recent Instagram carousel isn’t sitting well with some of her fans.
On Monday, Stewart shared a few snaps from a cruise through Greenland, writing, “End of the first zodiac cruise from @swanhelleniccruises into a very beautiful fjord on the east coast of greenland. We actually captured a small iceberg for our cocktails tonight.” That caption accompanied images of Stewart holding a cocktail—presumably with the iceberg ice—and a chunk of iceberg sitting on a cart.

While Stewart appeared to be enjoying herself, a handful of commenters criticized the businesswoman for her seemingly frivolous use of glacial ice while Greenland is greatly impacted by the climate crisis, Entertainment Weekly reported on Tuesday. “Martha the ice caps are melting don’t put them in your drink,” one person wrote. Said another: “I generally love Martha and the excesses of her life because she’s about beautiful gardens, homes, and food, but wealthy white people drinking their iceberg cocktails while the planet is in flames is a bit tone deaf.”
Other Instagram users came to Stewart’s defense, though. “So if she didn’t use some of the iceberg would it have kept it from melting? Doubtful,” someone wrote. “It’s a piece of floating ice. Nothing wrong with what you did. So many drama queens in here,” posted another.
Representatives for Stewart didn’t respond to Entertainment Weekly’s request for comment. But one of her fellow vacationers, Brian Kelly, did acknowledge the climate crisis in his own post about the trip. “Icebergs are pieces of art and watching them float by never gets old,” the Points Guy founder wrote. “The magnitude of the glaciers is humbling and frankly hard to fully comprehend. Greenland has been impacted particularly hard by global warming, but it’s beauty still cannot be understated.”
In another photo posted by Stewart, she and her travel companions can be seen toasting with Champagne. It may be a safer bet to stick to the bubbly, given that putting ice—whether from a berg or not—in a glass of Champagne may be a faux pas all its own.
