After the buzz surrounding rumors of a romance between Meryl Streep and Martin Short, the latter took to the rescheduled 2023 Emmys red carpet on Monday, Jan. 15, in style.
Short, who is nominated for an award for his performance as Oliver Putnam in the hit comedy series Only Murders in the Building, showed up at the awards show wearing a classic black tuxedo.
The chatter about a possible relationship between Short and Streep began after the two were spotted laughing and having a great time together on Jan. 7, at the Golden Globes. The two were seated together as co-stars of Only Murders in the Building—along with other cast members like Steve Martin and Selena Gomez—and many fans online started speculating about them. (Short even posed with Martin and Gomez on the red carpet at the 75th Emmy Awards.)
In the most recent season of the Hulu comedy series, Putnam and Streep's character, Loretta Durkin, have a sweet romance, and both actors were nominated at the Golden Globes for their performances.
While the two did a great job portraying their characters' story, a rep for Short denied the rumors, telling The Messenger of Short and Streep, “They are just very good friends, nothing more."
Both acclaimed actors are allegedly single right now, as Streep and her husband, Don Gummer, confirmed in late 2023 that they have been separated for years. Regarding Short, he was married to Nancy Dolman, but she sadly passed away in 2010 from ovarian cancer.
