Mary Lou Retton Shares Update on 'Slow Recovery' Following ICU Stay

Mary Lou Retton issued a positive update regarding the health scare that landed her in the intensive care unit (ICU) and "fighting for her life" earlier this month.

The 55-year-old former Olympic gymnast took to her Instagram page on Monday, Oct. 30, to share that she is "slowly recovering" and remaining optimistic as her healing journey continues.

Previously, Retton's daughters–McKenna Lane Kelley and Shayla Kelley Schrepferhad been the ones providing all the updates regarding their mother's battle with a severe case of pneumonia. But now, Retton appears to be in much better standing, sharing her own statement online.

"I'm beyond blessed to have the opportunity to make this statement," Retton began in the text post. "I am overwhelmed with all the love and support from the world as I fight. I am forever grateful to you all!"

"I'm with family continuing to slowly recover and staying very positive as I know this recovery is a long and slow process," she wrote.

"I appreciate everyone's respect of my privacy at this time," Retton added, noting, "When the time is right, I will be sharing more information about my health issues and hope I can help others who may face the same battle as me."

"I love you all," she concluded before signing off the note, "-MLR."

This latest update comes about a week after Kelley shared that her mother had finally been released from the hospital–about two and a half weeks after Retton was first admitted.

"Mom is home and in recovery mode," Kelley shared in an Oct. 23 Instagram update. "We still have a long road of recovery ahead of us, but baby steps."

Despite being one of the most decorated gymnasts in United States Olympic history, Retton was reportedly uninsured at the time she was hospitalized, leaving her family no choice but to crowdfund her medical costs. Thankfully, fans came through and raised a whopping $450,000 to help cover her bills and the cost of treatments.
