Mary Lou Retton's Daughter Shares Major Health Update for Olympian After Hospitalization

Mary Lou Retton has officially left the hospital after she was placed in the intensive care unit due to severe pneumonia.

Retton's daughter, McKenna Lane Kelley, shared the happy news on Instagram on Monday, Oct. 23, writing in a post, "Mom is home and in recovery mode. We still have a long road of recovery ahead of us, but baby steps."

"We are overwhelmed by the love and support from everyone. Grateful doesn't scrap the surface of the posture of our hearts," she went on. "Thank you Jesus, thank you doctors & nurses, thank you to this loving community of support."

The positive news follows an update from another of Retton's daughters, Shayla Kelley Schrepfer, who said on Oct. 18 that the Olympian faced a "scary setback" despite previous news that she was recovering.

She posted on social media, "At the beginning of this week, we were going on the up and up, we were so excited, seeing so much progress. And then yesterday we had a pretty scary setback. She is still in ICU and we’re just working through some things as far as her setback goes.”

Thankfully, it appears that the reported setback didn't stop Retton's recovery progress from letting the 55-year-old return home to work on getting better in a familiar environment with family and friends around her.

After it was first reported in early October that Retton had been hospitalized, her family organized a crowdfunding campaign to help pay for her hospital bill, raising over $450,000 total.

Retton has four children, with Shayla the eldest, followed by McKenna, Skyla, and Emma, all of whom she shares with ex-husband Shannon Kelley. The two were married from 1990 to 2018.

The gymnast is well-known for her impressive career as an athlete, with Retton becoming the first American woman to win the all-around gold medal in the 1984 Summer Olympics.
