MAS Holdings and Vizoo Move Digitization Forward

Claire Wilson
2 min read

Sri Lankan apparel giant MAS Holdings has implemented a high-tech digital material service hub engineered for brands and vendors that need digitization closer to the source.

Digital Product Creation (DPC) will give digital sampling a boost by bringing products to market faster, beating out the competition and having a positive influence on newness and profitability. DPC provides a bona fide digital twin that presents the actual garment visually and technically. Digital materials accurately replicate textures, colors and properties of the material that influence the look and fit of the garment.

Victoria’s Secret supplier MAS develops more than 3,000 unique digital styles annually, and in 2020 established a dedicated material digitization unit called Scan Hub to provide a high-quality property and texture-scanning service across its apparel and supply chain divisions. The unit was recently accredited by Vizoo, the German company considered the gold standard for certifying digital models.

“Vizoo’s technology enables us to achieve a realistic appearance in our materials second to none,” said Tharindu Meemaduma, MAS Holdings’ director, innovation. “This certification assures our processes to digitize materials are aligned to the highest industrial standards, strengthening confidence in the quality of our process amongst the brands we serve.”

The goal of MAS, which partners with Lululemon and Nike, is to enable as many digital decisions as possible and achieve a perfect physical product at every stage of sampling. It has years of expertise in DPC which gives the $2 billion conglomerate the ability to build digital twins across multiple stages of sampling, such as concept, prototypes, color and sales samples.

DPC is gaining ground in apparel, especially after the pandemic. The market moved toward a more agile and efficient product creation model where brands and supply chain partners drive end-to-end digital sampling. As a result, this growing demand for digitization has crowded the field with companies offering digitization, with varying outcomes.

At the same time, Vizoo developers saw the need for a certification program to level the playing field, particularly given the number of players involved in a given product. There had to be a single standard.

A single standard would also be required to reassure manufacturers that are reluctant to invest in digital.

“We need reliability when multiple partners are involved in the digital product creation process,” according to Renate Eder, chief creative officer of Vizoo, founded in 2013, who has also worked at Adidas. “Users must be able to trust on digital assets being able to benefit from them.”

Vizoo has been a strategic partner to MAS, whose Scan Hub is equipped with Vizoo’s xTex material scanners and xTex software, measurement devices for physical parameters for Browzwear and Clo 3D along with other quality control devices.
