Master the Art of Veronica Lake Waves

You might not know Veronica Lake’s films, but you definitely know her hair. The femme fatale’s retro waves have become somewhat of a red carpet staple. Elizabeth Olsen, Blake Lively, Carey Mulligan, and Reese Witherspoon are among the stars that have rocked the look in recent years and we predict there will be plenty more copycats during the coming awards season. In honor of Lake’s birthday, we asked Pureology Artistic Ambassador Ruth Roche to give us the step-by-step for getting these glam waves at home — just in time for the holidays. Here’s how to cop Lake’s style:
1. Start with a mixture of Pureology Smooth Perfection Style Shaping Gel ($28) and Pureology Smooth Perfection Lightweight Smoothing Lotion ($28) and apply through damp hair.
2. Blow dry hair, creating volume at the roots using fingers. Dry top of head smooth using a round brush. Create a side part.
3. Using small sections, set hair with one-inch curling iron, moving away from the part. After removing the iron from the curl, secure into place using bobby pins and allow hair to cool. Continue to curl the hair all the way down to the nape, setting each section in the same direction. Repeat on the other side.
4. Spray all-over with Pureology Colour Stylist Strengthening Control zero dulling hairspray ($26) to set curls in place.
5. Remove bobby pins from each section. Brush out sets slightly away from face. Using your fingers, push hair up and towards the face to create the waves, and push the hair into place.
6. Finish with Pureology Colour Stylist Strengthening Control zero dulling hairspray to set in place for lasting hold.
