Matthew Perry’s Cause of Death ‘Deferred’ Pending Results of Toxicology Report

Matthew Perry’s autopsy is complete, pending the results of a toxicology report. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed the news to People on Sunday.

Currently, the Friends star's cause of death is listed as “deferred,” as it is “pending an official investigation.” It remains unclear when the report will be completed, as determining the results of toxicology tests can sometimes take weeks.

“In cases where the cause of death cannot be determined at the time of autopsy, a deferred certificate will be issued until additional studies have been completed,” the LA coroner’s guidelines state.

Perry died suddenly on Saturday at the age of 54 from an apparent accidental drowning. Though his death is being investigated by the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division, the department has confirmed that “foul play is not suspected at this time,” but noted that “the investigation is ongoing.”

Police were summoned to Perry’s Pacific Palisades residence around 4:07 PM after his assistant returned home from running errands and found the actor lifeless in his jacuzzi. The initial report implied that Perry might have suffered a cardiac arrest. He was already deceased by the time first responders arrived.

His death shocked fans and collaborators around the world, many of whom have posted tributes to the legendary comedian. As Perry had a history of alcohol and substance abuse, his passing has sparked a fair amount of conjecture, too. Fans have dissected his final Instagram post, and photos of his last public sighting, searching for answers to his tragic passing.

Perry’s most prominent role was the acerbic Chandler Bing on the hit sitcom Friends, which ran from 1994 until 2004. In 2002, he won an Emmy for the role. Perry also appeared in the movies Fools Rush In, Three to Tango, Serving Sara, and 17 Again.
