McDonald’s Chicken Big Mac Hits U.S. Restaurants This Month—What’s Inside the New Sandwich
When you crave a quick hamburger, chicken nuggets or fries, heading to McDonald’s is an easy fix. What’s even better is that their menu just got a bit bigger. The fast food chain recently announced the addition of the long-awaited Chicken Big Mac, and fans are thrilled. Feeling hungry? Keep reading to learn more about the sandwich and when you can chow down on one.
The Chicken Big Mac is coming to the U.S.
The traditional Big Mac from McDonald’s is getting a sibling. The company revealed that the Chicken Big Mac will now be available in U.S. restaurants starting on October 10. Fans have been hoping for a chicken version of the fast food staple since 1968 and now they can experience it while supplies last.
Instead of burgers, the Chicken Big Mac will feature two tempura-style chicken patties. It also includes cheese, pickles, shredded lettuce and of course, the signature Big Mac sauce.
While the sandwich was previously sold in the United Kingdom and briefly in Miami, this is the first time it will be offered across the U.S. It sold out within 10 days in the U.K., and McDonald’s hopes to see the same level of success in the U.S.
"With the introduction of the Chicken Big Mac, we're excited to pay homage to one of our most iconic menu items, the Big Mac, and introduce it to a whole new generation of fans," said Tariq Hassan, Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer at McDonald's USA in a statement. "By tapping into some of our fans' biggest passions from dupe culture to live-streaming, we're able to serve up more than just a sandwich. There truly is something for everyone to enjoy in this campaign and we're bringing experiences that will surprise and delight them, all before the Chicken Big Mac hits restaurants."
Fans tried a similar sandwich in Los Angeles
Last weekend, during a Chain pop-up dining experience in Los Angeles, the new sandwich made a surprise appearance. McDonnell’s, a featured restaurant at the pop-up, served a chicken sandwich that fans could recognize as a McDonald’s dupe.
The item had two chicken patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese and pickles on a sesame seed bun. Not long after the event, McDonald’s revealed in a press release that they were behind McDonnell’s. Attendees weren’t told which items were actually made by McDonald’s, but folks were familiar with the restaurant’s ingredients.
McDonald’s is building a chicken menu
Lately, McDonald’s has been figuring out ways to include more chicken. After all, poultry is cheaper than beef.
"Consumers are more discriminating with their spend," CEO Chris Kempczinski said in the company’s most recent earnings release. The team is diving into "outstanding execution" of providing "reliable, everyday value" and "accelerating strategic growth drivers like chicken and loyalty," he said. Chicken sales are now at the same level as beef, he notes.
What to expect from the Chicken Big Mac
McDonald’s hopes to please fans by adding the Chicken Big Mac to their menu. For the next month, the restaurant is teaming up with online streamer and proclaimed “Big Mac” super fan Kai Cenat to promote the sandwich.
He’ll assess whether the Chicken Big Mac is a Big Mac by making live appearances on the company’s social channels. Fans can follow along on social media and join Cenat for his Chicken Big Mac journey. People on Instagram are already excited about Cenat’s collaboration and have shared comments with excitement ahead of the sandwich release.
