Some McDonald’s Franchises May Continue Operating With A Limited Menu
McDonald's began serving a more limited menu early this year to help employees better manage demand and enhanced safety measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that social distancing measures are beginning to lift, franchisees have supported keeping the more limited menu and it seems like it could be sticking around at certain McDonald's locations.
The National Owners Association, an advocacy group for McDonald's franchisees, reportedly issued a letter showing support for keeping around a more limited menu, which includes putting a pause on all-day breakfast. They say that nixing certain menu items like salads, grilled chicken sandwiches, and chicken tenders has made service speedier and less stressful, according to Nation's Restaurant News.
"The limited menu and ease of operations are allowing our teams to focus and provide blazing fast service," they said in a letter obtained by NRN: "We are convinced. Keeping our menu’s simplified is your NOA’s number one priority. Our second priority is a singular focus on our drive thrus."
McDonald's has previously said that the menu changes would only be temporary but issued a statement to NRN saying that they are evaluating the "best path forward."
“Our temporary limited menu has helped us provide the best possible customer experience while simplifying operations in our kitchens and for our crew during the pandemic,” the company said. “We are partnering closely with our franchisees to monitor the impact of COVID-19 on restaurant operations and evaluate the best path forward for our national menu.”
McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski gave another clue in a recent earnings call, saying that menu decisions could be made on a regional basis.
“I think it's probably safe to say at this point that that is going to be a market by market decision,” he said. “Maybe we want to go back in more of a staged way and add some items but not all items.”
For what it's worth, a survey conducted by GlobalData said that 61 percent of customers said they'd be fine with a more limited menu sticking around.
