'Mean Girls' stars reunite to support Las Vegas survivors
Of course, helping those affected by the Las Vegas massacre is the human, compassionate thing to do, but now it’s the grool thing to do, too. Mean Girls cast members Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert, Daniel Franzese, and Jonathan Bennett starred in a video released Tuesday, Oct. 3 — known as Mean Girls day, because the of the date’s significance in the 2004 flick — asking fans to donate as little as $3 to the cause.
“Guys, look. We know fetch is never gonna happen,” Chabert (aka Gretchen Wieners) says. “But we can make this happen.”
The origins of Mean Girls Day, of course, stem from the scene in the movie in which Bennett’s Aaron Samuels — the crush of Lindsay Lohan’s Cady Heron — asks her for the date in class.
As of late Tuesday morning, the clever campaign, hosted at GoFundMe.com/october3, had raised nearly $10,000 of the $300,000 goal. Many of the donations were small, just $5 or $10, but more than 500 people donated. (Too bad the movie’s star, Lindsay Lohan, has been out of the country, and missed the chance at a mini reunion, since she’s long wanted a sequel. She marked the day with a meme.)
The message on the campaign website: “We are working directly with the National Compassion Fund, a program in the National Center for Victims of Crime. This organization collected and distributed funds to victims of the Pulse Nightclub shooting, the Aurora shooting, and even 9/11. 100% of funds raised will be distributed to the victims of Las Vegas through the NCF at the completion of this campaign.”
And celebs in the Mean Girls crew weren’t the only ones supporting victims. A separate GoFundMe page, organized by Clark County Commission Chair Steve Sisolak, collected more than $3.6 million from 51,000-plus people in its first day. Kid Rock was a big part of that; the rocker contributed $10,000, as did the bands Florida Georgia Line and The Chainsmokers, and Vegas mainstay Mike Tyson. Today show host Hoda Kotb kicked in another $1,000.
