Meet Destry Allyn, a Famous Daughter Making a Name for Herself in Hollywood
Destry Allyn
In the movie business, adopting a head-turning moniker is a time-honored maneuver. That’s why it seems counter-intuitive that Destry Allyn, the 21-year-old daughter of Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, would drop her famed surname to pursue acting. “I want to do this on my own terms,” she says. “I want to know for myself that I did it on my own.” And she has.
After a stint modeling (she walked for Dolce & Gabbana), Allyn is forging ahead, enrolling at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute and now working on her first feature. “I don’t want to do the big box office–type movies,” she says. After all, that’s Dad’s thing.
Allyn’s independent streak emerged early, when she was a competitive equestrian. “I grew up around [the film industry], so I was like, ‘I’m going to stay away,’ but I ended up falling in love with it,” she says.
Another family tradition she’s following is philanthropy. Allyn has worked with equine therapy programs for children with disabilities, and she plans to create a nonprofit for at-risk youth to learn about filmmaking.
