For Kelsey Asbille the past year has provided an opportunity for a different type of semester abroad. The South Carolina native has been attending Columbia University-where she’s studying human rights with a specialization in indigenous issues-but the chance to put schoolwork on hold to film Yellowstone, the hit series that premiered this summer on the Paramount Network, was too good to pass up.

“Some westerns paint the world as they want it to be, but Yellowstone tries to understand what’s really going on,” Asbille says. “It’s a story that hasn’t already been told.”

The time off also offered an opportunity for Asbille, who started acting in her teens and had her breakout moment in 2017, courtesy of the movie Wind River, to pursue interests best explored outside the classroom.

For example, earlier this year she got a crash course in fashion when she accompanied Calvin Klein chief creative officer Raf Simons to the CFDA Fashion Awards. And while Asbille is hopeful that Yellowstone will be renewed for a second season, she says she’s just as likely to be found in the coming months back on the Columbia campus as on another Hollywood set. “It’s nice to take a step away from the industry,” she says, “and really challenge yourself.”
