Meet Tiger Grass: The Skin-Care Ingredient Everyone Can (and Should) Use

Updated

If you’re a K-beauty devotee, you may have already heard of tiger grass, as it’s a commonly used ingredient in many skin-care products from serums to creams. If you’re wondering what tigers and grass have to do with skin, here’s a quick primer.

What is it? Tiger grass, aka centella asiatica (or “cica” for short) is a centuries-old ingredient that was traditionally used in Chinese medicine to treat wounds. Tigers in Asia have been known to roll around in the plant to help heal any trauma abrasions or infections—hence the name.

Does it really work? According to studies, researchers found that tiger grass does indeed “facilitate the healing process in both incision and burn wounds.” Science has spoken. (Anecdotally, we’ve heard rave reviews about the stuff from our friends with easily irritated, chapped or red skin.)

Who is it for? Though it was initially marketed toward people with sensitive skin, it's actually a pretty universal ingredient that anyone can benefit from using. Full of fatty acids and phytochemicals, including vitamins C, A and B1, it can help with everything from acne to rosacea and dullness.

Try it: La Roche-Posay ($15); L’Oréal ($18); Dr. Jart ($46); Peach & Lily ($79)
