"My capacity is constantly being expanded," she previously told Parade, adding, "At that moment when you are totally overwhelmed and can't do anymore, it’s really cool to lean into that and always demand more of yourself and see where you can do more, be more and challenge yourself in those ways."

In 1999, Rapinoe joined the under-14 Northern California state Olympic Development Program (ODP) team, and three years later, she joined the regional ODP team. She and her sister Rachael also played for Elk Grove Pride in the Women's Premier Soccer League from 2002 to 2005.

From 2005 to 2008, Rapinoe played for the University of Portland Pilots, ending her first season early due to an ACL injury. Despite only playing 60 games for the team, she set several records for it. Concurrently with her time on the Pilots, in 2006, Rapinoe joined the United States Women's National Soccer Team, but missed the 2007 World Cup and 2008 Olympics due to two separate ACL injuries.

Rapinoe played her first FIFA Women's World Cup in 2011 and led Team USA to a gold medal at the London Olympics the following year. She played the 2015 and 2019 World Cups, winning both, and helped Team USA get a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

"When I’m talking about LGBTQ rights, when I’m taking a knee in support of Colin Kaepernick, when I’m talking about police brutality or pay equity, it’s all the same exact thing to me," she previously told Parade. "It's just trying to make the world a better place and shedding light on issues. It's about having everybody's voice heard and setting up society to benefit everyone."

"Part of it is just who I am, I am gay so there's that aspect, and I am a female athlete. So there is a lot of activism potential in there," she added. "I feel like female athletes are always on the forefront of anything activism because the intersectionality of us all just runs so deep—we're women of color, gay, we're women."

Also, let's be honest: She's also at least somewhat famous for her awesome hair.
