The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are joining the members of the fashion community in paying tribute to renowned photographer Peter Lindbergh, who died yesterday at the age of 74.

The royal couple took to Instagram this morning to share one of Lindbergh's photographs and a behind-the-scenes snap of the photographer embracing Meghan Markle. The duchess had previously worked with Lindbergh for her 2017 cover of Vanity Fair and the September 2019 cover for British Vogue, which she guest-edited. The latter is one of Lindbergh's final projects, according to the Sussexes' Instagram post. "There is no other photographer she [Meghan] considered to bring this meaningful project to life," part of their caption read.

Some of Lindbergh's most famous works starred '90s supermodels from Linda Evangelista to Naomi Campbell to Kate Moss. He also frequently photographed for past issues of Harper's BAZAAR.

In the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's message, the couple praised what Lindbergh was known for: "capturing the essence of a subject and promoting healthy ideals of beauty, eschewing photoshopping, and preferring natural beauty with minimal makeup."

Lindbergh's penchant for highlighting natural beauty made for a smooth collaboration with the Duchess of Sussex for her "Forces of Change" British Vogue cover. "My instructions from the duchess were clear: ‘I want to see freckles!'" he recalled to the magazine. "Well, that was like running through open doors for me. I love freckles."

He added of working with the cover stars selected by Meghan, "All the women were different, but they each had something special. Sometimes I worry I am becoming an old shmuck, but it was wonderful to photograph this project."

Lindbergh's passing was announced earlier this morning on Instagram. According to the statement, the iconic photographer is survived by his wife, Petra; his first wife, Astrid; his four sons, Benjamin, Jérémy, Simon, Joseph; and seven grandchildren.
