Shop the flattering color Meghan Markle can't stop wearing
It might seem like Meghan Markle is a risk-taker in her fashion sensibility, but when it comes down to choosing one color to wear, she can’t stay away from navy blue.
Why is navy blue such a flattering color? According to Jane Shepherdson, CEO of Whistles, a contemporary British fashion label, “It is more forgiving than black, less harsh and carries with it a subtle whiff of sophistication,” she told The Guardian. In the same interview, Kate Phelan, creative director of Topshop said, “Everything and everyone looks good in navy.”
If you trace Meghan’s style history back to 2017, the duchess has long been wearing navy blue coats and dresses on a myriad of occasions, such as the World AIDS Day charity fair in Nottingham, England, and at the International Women’s Day celebration in Birmingham. This trend has continued into 2018.
On May 18, the day before she was set to marry Prince Harry, she arrived at the Cliveden House hotel alongside her mother, Doria Ragland, wearing a navy sheath dress by Roland Mouret. Meghan’s love affair with navy blue continued throughout the summer when she celebrated the centenary of the Royal Air Force in Dior and attended the Sentebale polo match wearing a Carolina Herrera A-line belted navy dress. On Oct. 12, at Princess Eugenie‘s wedding, she once again wore a chic, tailored navy ensemble by her wedding dress designer — Givenchy. Now, during Meghan and Harry’s highly publicized royal tour to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and Tonga, Meghan has already worn two navy looks: a two-tone dress by Roksanda and a fitted navy dress by Dion Lee, which subsequently caused the designer’s site to crash. One of the consequences of the “Meghan Markle Effect.”
For someone like Meghan who has a darker complexion and dark brown/black hair, blue is considered an especially flattering color to wear. According to Verily Mag, someone with Meghan’s skin tone (a mix of “blue-brown” melanin tones) and dark hair color looks best in rich jewel tones, such as royal blue. It’s no surprise, then, that Meghan always looks radiant in this shade. Plus, navy blue is having a big moment on the catwalk. In September during fashion week, top designers including Christian Dior, Cushnie, Dries Van Noten, and Gabriela Hearst all showcased navy blue looks in their upcoming spring 2019 collections.
