Meghan Markle Closed Her Own Car Door and People Can't Handle It

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, really is just like us. Don’t believe me? Just look at her close her own car door like a non-royal.

Meghan made waves when she arrived at the Royal Academy of Arts earlier this week to attend her first solo event as a royal. It was then that someone opened a car door for Meghan, she stepped out, and then, shut the door herself.

“World gasps as Meghan Markle closes her own car door. Here it is moment by moment as it happened,” Twitter user Mike Sington posted.

“She closes her own door. She is every woman,” another user tweeted.

“DUCHESS CLOSES DOOR: The Duchess of Sussex #MeghanMarkle closed her door against royal protocol,” one more user added.

But, is it really that big of a deal that Meghan, who became a member of the royal family less than a year ago, closed a door? It turns out, nope, it’s not a big deal at all.

“Usually, if you are a member of the royal family or a dignitary, you have a member of staff to open and close a car door for you,” Etiquette expert William Hanson shared with Radio News 1, adding that having someone do it for them is for security reasons rather than "airs and graces." However, he added that it’s not against any official protocol to shut your own door.

This isn’t the first time Meghan has opened or closed a car door for herself. Just last week the Duchess also closed her own car door at the launch of her charity cookbook. And odds are this feminist princess will keep opening and closing doors for herself because she can.
