Meghan Markle guest-edits British Vogue — featuring joint interview with Michelle Obama
More than a month after husband Prince Harry helped play host to the Trumps, Meghan Markle is revealing that she’s been spending time with a different first lady: former FLOTUS Michelle Obama.
The duchess confirmed rumors that she has served as guest editor for British Vogue ’s prestigious September issue — the first person to do so in the magazine’s 103-year history — by sharing the cover.
Dubbed “Forces for Change,” the issue — out next Friday, Aug. 2 — features 15 “world-leading women” including activists, politicians, models and actresses like Greta Thunberg, Jane Fonda, Jameela Jamil, Salma Hayek, Yara Shahidi, Christy Turlington, Laverne Cox and New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern. The collage-style cover features a 16th mirrored slot “so that when you hold the issue in your hands, you see yourself as part of this collective,” the magazine explained.
“Guest-editing the September issue of British Vogue has been rewarding, educational and inspiring,” the duchess said on Instagram. “To deep-dive into this process, working quietly behind the scenes for so many months, I am happy to now be able to share what we have created. A huge thanks to all of the friends who supported me in this endeavor, lending their time and energy to help within these pages and on the cover. Thank you for saying ‘Yes!’ — and to Edward {Enninful, British Vogue editor-in-chief], thank you for this wonderful opportunity.”
Enninful, who called Meghan “the country’s most influential beacon of change,” explained why the new mother opted out of being on the cover herself.
“As you will see from her selections throughout this magazine, she is also willing to wade into more complex and nuanced areas, whether they concern female empowerment, mental health, race or privilege,” he said. “From the very beginning, we talked about the cover — whether she would be on it or not. In the end, she felt that it would be in some ways a ‘boastful’ thing to do for this particular project. She wanted, instead, to focus on the women she admires.”
The magazine has also teased that the issue will feature “an exclusive interview” between Meghan and Obama. While that has yet to be released, readers are already calling the magazine move “awesome and inspiring.”
