Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Honor the Late Peter Lindbergh
Legendary fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh has died at the age of 74. He was known for his portraits of 1990s supermodels—"It was a new generation, and that new generation came with a new interpretation of women," he would later say—but his last project was documenting a diverse group of women for the September issue of British Vogue.
That was, of course, the issue that Meghan Markle had guest-edited—and like the 15 cover stars he photographed, Meghan hand-picked Lindbergh for the job. "The Duchess of Sussex had worked with Peter in the past and personally chose him to shoot the 15 women on the cover for the September issue of British Vogue, which she guest edited," reads a post on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's account, honoring the late Lindbergh. "There is no other photographer she considered to bring this meaningful project to life."
The post featured the photo that Lindbergh's official account had used to announce his passing, as well as an image of the Duchess and Lindbergh together. In the caption, Meghan and Harry explained that he wasn't only a great photographer, but a crusader against the fashion industry's instinct to heavily photoshop and retouch images.
"His work is revered globally for capturing the essence of a subject and promoting healthy ideals of beauty, eschewing photoshopping, and preferring natural beauty with minimal makeup," the caption read.
As Lindbergh himself wrote in the introduction to his 2018 book Shadows on the Wall, "It should be a duty for every photographer working today to use his creativity and influence to free women and everyone from the terror of youth and perfection."
