Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Officially Announce Their Charity Registry
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are paying it forward with their wedding. As speculated, the royal couple officially announced Monday, April 9, that they have set up a charity wedding registry in lieu of physical gifts.
“Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle are incredibly grateful for the goodwill shown to them since the announcement of their engagement and are keen that as many people as possible benefit from this generosity of spirit,” Kensington Palace announced in its statement. “The couple have therefore asked that anyone who might wish to mark the occasion considers making a donation to charity, rather than sending a wedding gift.”
Markle and her future husband have selected seven charities spotlighting issues ranging from children’s HIV needs to women’s empowerment causes. “Prince Harry and Ms. Markle have personally selected seven organizations they would like to support, reflecting their shared values,” the palace continued.
The orgs include CHIVA (Children’s HIV Association), Crisis (which addresses homelessness in the U.K.), the Myna Mahila Foundation (which helps women in the urban slums of Mumbai build their economic futures), Scotty’s Little Soldiers (a charity that provides for the children of late Armed Forces members), StreetGames? (a fitness-centered, community-centric program that works with youth), Surfers Against Sewage (for environmental, oceanic conservation), and The Wilderness Foundation UK.
Chief executives spearheading each chosen organization released statements in response to Markle and Harry’s generosity.
Just last week, Markle’s Suits co-star Patrick J. Adams said he wanted to get “something classy” for his on-screen fiancee. “We were trying to choose between like a blender or bread maker,” the actor, who’s married to Troian Bellisario, told ET. “You know something classy, like a good blender. Like a Vitamix, yeah. She’s gonna need a Vitamix for sure.”
The bride and groom are following in the footsteps of Prince William and Kate Middleton, who also went the charitable route in 2011. The couple at the time raised an astounding $1 million which ultimately, was divided amongst 26 organizations.
