Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Seek to Extend “Megxit” for Another Year
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry seek to extend “Megxit” for another year.
Meghan and Harry’s current agreement with Buckingham Palace will expire on March 31.
It’s been almost a year since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their separation from the royal family. Meghan, Harry, and their son, Archie, have been attempting to live semi-regular lives (emphasis on semi) in their new town, Montecito, California. March 31 is quickly approaching, which has significance to the couple: It’s the day their current agreement with Buckingham Palace expires. Meghan and Harry were allowed to maintain their charity support duties through March, but now they are attempting to extend “Megxit” for another year.
According to The Sun, Meghan and Harry want a more permanent agreement to continue living as nonworking royals in California despite their huge deals with Netflix and Spotify. They are planning to speak with the senior royals via Zoom in January to sort out the agreement.
“Although they will do some of it by Zoom, Harry wants to meet face-to-face to tie it all up,” royal biographer Andrew Morton explains. “Things seem to have calmed down. Harry has been in contact with the Queen more often than you would think. But certain things you need to be there in person to sort. They will need a few weeks. That could be done after April, depending on Covid.”
However, there’s a chance that the meeting won’t go well. Outlets are reporting that the royal family isn’t pleased with Meghan and Harry’s streaming deals. A “royal insider” tells The Mirror (via The Express) that Meghan and Harry’s contract will inevitably be “scrutinized by the royal household”—which was actually part of their agreement upon stepping down as working royals.
“Harry and Meghan did leave as working members of the family with everyone’s best wishes and it is sincerely hoped they find the happiness that appeared to be lacking in their lives,” the source said, somewhat saltily. “However, it goes without saying any deals they are making will be scrutinized by the royal household.”
I so wish I could be a fly in that Zoom call.
