Meghan Markle’s Something Old, New, Borrowed and Blue at the Royal Wedding: What Were They?
Not that she’ll need it, but Meghan Markle ensured that she’ll have plenty of good luck coming her way when she incorporated multiple elements into her wedding that covered her bases for her something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.
The former Suits actress, who stunned viewers around the world with her sleek, chic Givenchy gown, added a few thoughtful touches to her wardrobe—both the more covered-up ceremony gown and her sexy Stella McCartney reception look—that royal fans have been trying to decode ever since. Here are the best guesses as to which aspects of the royal wedding accounted for each of the four parts of the time-honored tradition.
Something Old
Markle, 36, incorporated several traditional accessories into her big day, though some were more obvious than others. The most obvious may have been her sparkling tiara, which she borrowed from The Queen, and which previously belonged to Queen Mary (that particular headpiece is called the Queen Mary Bandeau Tiara). The diamond bandeau is English and was made in 1932, and the center brooch dates all the way back to 1893.
According to rumor, a piece of fabric from the late Princess Diana’s wedding gown was sewn into Markle’s dress, which could also account for her “something old.”

The royal wedding florist, Philippa Craddock, also subtly added a “something old” to Markle’s bouquet—sprigs of myrtle reportedly from a plant that grew from the myrtle used in the Queen’s own 1947 wedding bouquet. A tad more symbolically, Craddock also included forget-me-nots, one of Princess Diana’s favorite flowers, into the bridal bouquet.

Something New
There were plenty of things that Markle wore that could be considered her “something new,” starting with her jaw-dropping long-sleeved, double-bonded silk Givenchy gown, designed by British designer Clare Waight Keller. Her veil, also new and designed by Keller, incorporated floral symbols honoring all 53 countries of the Commonwealth (the nations of which the Queen is their head). Keller notably added a Wintersweet from Kensington Palace and a California Poppy in honor of Meghan’s home state of California.
Her reception gown, a custom silk crepe halter-neck Stella McCartney number that similarly turned heads, was also “something new.” Her jewelry (aside from a few key pieces) were all new pieces by Cartier.
Something Borrowed
Here’s where Markle made sure to honor the traditions of the royal family. In addition to Queen Mary’s Bandeau Tiara, Markle also wore a stunning aquamarine cocktail ring that previously belonged to Princess Diana, which many point to being an equally obvious “something borrowed.” Since Princess Diana left her jewelry to the wives of her sons in her will, however, it is possible that Prince Harry actually gifted the ring to Markle instead of just loaning it to her for their wedding day.
Regardless, the family jewel was an eye-catching part of the couple’s big day, with Markle flashing it excitedly as she and Harry waved to cheering crowds as they departed Windsor Castle toward their reception.

Something Blue
The ring, due to its piercing aquamarine color, is also being considered by many royal fans to be Markle’s “something blue”—but even if it weren’t, there are plenty of elements the new Duchess of Sussex incorporated into her big day that could qualify as this final charm. The forget-me-nots in her bridal bouquet, for instance, were a beautiful shade of blue, and her reception shoes, silky satin heels by Aquazurra, featured a nude mesh and painted blue soles. But perhaps one of the most fun possibilities was the sleek ride in which she and her new husband, Prince Harry, drove to the reception: a silver blue Jaguar E-Type Concept Zero.
