Meghan Markle Will Spend the Night Before Her Wedding at a Scandalous Hotel

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are just days away from walking down the aisle at the biggest wedding of the year. But, before they become husband and wife, they must spend one last night apart.

This Friday, Meghan and Harry are expected to spend the night before their wedding in different hotel rooms: Prince Harry at the Dorchester Collection’s Coworth Park with his brother, Prince William, and Meghan and her mother, Doria Ragland, at the Cliveden House.

While each hotel is certainly glamorous enough for a royal, Meghan’s choice of accommodations also comes with a rather risqué backstory. The Cliveden House was built in 1666 by the Duke of Buckingham as a place specifically meant to entertain his mistress and friends.

Since its construction, the hotel has become well-known for its history of “unapologetic debauchery,” according to its website.

“With a history of unapologetic debauchery, our Grade I listed stately home's most heinous of scandals shook the British parliament and played out on these very grounds,” it says on the site.

“The year was 1961. While the Cold War was slowly chilling British politics, Cliveden House was engulfed in a sultry summer of sweltering heat. Cooling off in the now famous outdoor pool, was Christine Keeler, a nineteen year old mistress of a suspected Russian spy.”

As the site further noted, while attending a mid-summer bash thrown by the hotel’s then owner Lord Astor, the young woman – and potential spy – began a torrid affair with John Profumo, an “up-and-coming Conservative Secretary of State for War and husband of well-known actress, Valerie Hobson.”

The affair forced Profumo to resign his post and, “irrevocably damage the Prime Minister's reputation, and impact on the course of British politics forever.”

So yeah, perhaps not the best vibe for your pre-wedding dreams.

But, even with the hotel’s raucous party history, we’re certain Meghan will have a restful night’s sleep, especially if she books the hotel’s private Spring Cottage.

The cottage, which can sleep up to six people in its three luxurious bedrooms and is available from $2,793 per night, is set right on the banks of the River Thames. There, the soon-to-be bride can relax in the deep soaking tub, read a book in the small nook library, sit by the fire with her mom for some girl talk, and cook a delicious (and likely very healthy) last meal as a single, non-royal woman in the chef’s kitchen. She can also sit out in the cottage’s garden to watch the sun go down. In the morning, Meghan can then choose to leave via the cottage’s private River Thames boat launch.

If for some reason Meghan chooses to be among the commoners at the hotel, she could decide to take part in its afternoon tea, or visit its well-appointed spa for a treatment, massage, or spend a little time doing laps in the pool.

While all this certainly sounds stellar, let’s all just hope Meghan doesn’t meet a mystery man in the hotel gardens and starts up another torrid English affair.
