Meghan Markle makes major fashion faux pas in Tonga — but she still looks amazing
Meghan Markle epitomized elegance when she arrived for an official dinner with the king and queen of Tonga on Thursday night. With Prince Harry by her side, the 37-year-old Duchess of Sussex stepped out in a white floor-length gown with cap sleeves by Theia.
She paired the dress with her favorite Aquazzura Deneuve pumps and a Givenchy clutch.
As the royal couple arrived at the Consular House in central Nuku’alofa, the John Lennon classic “Imagine” played in the background ahead of an evening that featured some traditional Tongan entertainment.
Earlier in the day, the couple arrived in Tonga, and all eyes were on Meghan when she accidentally made a fashion faux pas. As she stepped off the plane in a stunning scarlet $515 Self-Portrait dress, eagle-eyed royal watchers noticed she still had the tag swinging off the frock’s midi-length hem.
Aside from the hanging label, the long-sleeve dress beautifully showed off the duchess’s growing baby bump. She paired it with black stilettos and a matching clutch.
In the morning, Harry and Meghan kicked off their third and final day in Fiji during their 16-day royal tour with a visit to the city of Nadi for the unveiling of a statue to a hero sergeant. The Duchess of Sussex looked content and calm hours after having to leave a Suva market early on Wednesday afternoon due to a crowd-control related security risk.
She was visiting Suva Municipal Market to meet some of the female vendors who have been involved in the U.N. Women’s project Markets for Change. Meghan was supposed to spend about 20 minutes mingling with the locals, but her visit ended abruptly after six minutes, with Meghan escorted out of the building by officials.
According to numerous reports, Kensington Palace came to the conclusion that the crowds were too big and decided to pull the plug early on the scheduled appearance. Meghan’s protection officer could be seen in the photos putting her hands out in front of the pregnant royal and trying to keep people back.
Meghan also wore a $1,695 crepe sheath dress by Jason Wu for an engagement at Nadi airport on Thursday, worn with a pair of black heels and gold, leaf-shaped drop earrings. She watched as husband Harry delivered a moving speech at the unveiling of the statue, which commemorates Sgt. Talaiasi Labalaba, a British-Fijian solider who died during battle.
Among the guests greeted by the royals were senior members of the armed forces, politicians, and the president of Fiji. The ceremony was the couple’s last engagement in Fiji before heading to Tonga.
