Meghan McCain shares first photos of baby Liberty Sage in return to 'The View': 'Motherhood is insane'

Meghan McCain is back from maternity leave — and showing off daughter Liberty Sage’s face for the first time since giving birth on Sept. 28. (The new arrival had previously been pictured with her back to the camera as her mother cuddled her.)

McCain, who is still patching in from home due to the coronavirus pandemic, returned to The View on Monday with quite the hot topic: baby pics. Photos shared on the daytime program — as well as on McCain’s Instagram account and in People magazine — show the 3-month-old infant lounging in bed, posing with her famous mom in front of their Christmas tree and getting in some crucial tummy time.

Wearing a high ponytail and a black-and-white houndstooth top, the TV personality opened up about her experiences as a new mom.

“Being with a newborn baby has been surprising to me because motherhood, I think as everyone knows, was not a simple journey for me,” she added, referencing the miscarriage she had in 2019. “Just being with her is like, the way I’ve heard [people describe] taking ecstasy. It’s just amazing, and I’ve been in this bubble of love and baby time, and she’s just perfect.

“It feels like having a little piece of my dad back,” the daughter of the late Sen. John McCain continued. “It’s amazing. Ben and I are so in love, and she’s so feisty, she’s a wildcat — I mean, surprise, surprise, she’s my daughter.”

And while the conservative McCain and co-panelist Sunny Hostin often butt heads over politics, the two women have been staying in close touch during her maternity leave.

“She helped me when I had mastitis at 2 in the morning,” the new mom said of Hostin. “And you’ve been talking to me all about new motherhood. It’s been wonderful.”

McCain, who opted to not share photos or personal details about her pregnancy before Liberty’s birth in order to avoid exposing herself to “cruel” comments, recently posted throwback selfies showing off her baby bump.

“The year wasn’t all bad,” she wrote.
