'Melania' is now one of the most popular baby names
The Social Security Administration has released its latest rankings of popular baby names in the United States — and there’s one surprising moniker that’s climbed in popularity. From 2016 to 2017, “Melania” was fifth on the SSA’s list of “fastest-growing girls’ names,” the Hill noted.
According to the SSA, 283 female babies born in 2017 were given the name Melania. That may not sound like a ton of people, but it marks a huge increase from how many female babies were named Melania in 2016. As the Hill explained, “Melania” was up 720 spots on the list of most popular baby names. In 2016, the name was at the 1,650th most popular spot; in 2017, it was the 930th most popular name.
The rest of the list of most popular baby names from 2017 is less surprising. “Liam” and “Emma” lead the pack. There are still some unique names on the list, though. For female babies, the names that had the biggest increases in popularity were “Ensley” and “Oaklynn,” the Hill noted.
Other names, like “Alexa,” are decreasing in popularity, the Associated Press pointed out — possibly because new parents may not want their children to have the same name as Amazon’s voice assistant. Among male babies’ names, “Kylo” is also decreasing in popularity.
The Hill pointed out that the report comes as Melania Trump is doing favorably in U.S. polls. A CNN poll released this week found that 57 percent of poll respondents had a “favorable” view of Melania Trump.
The increase in popularity for the first lady’s name wasn’t seen on her husband’s side, though. Among the most popular male baby names, “Donald” came in at 488th place on the list, the same place it held in 2016. According to the SSA, 594 male babies were born with the name “Donald” in 2017. So there are more babies named Donald running around than there are babies named Melania, but the uptick is still significant.
