Melania Trump leaves her controversial coat at home to visit Arizona detention facility holding undocumented immigrants
Melania Trump seemingly left her controversial jacket at home for her latest trip.
On Thursday, the first lady set off from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland for Arizona wearing a black shirt and white pants, which she paired with black flats.
She landed at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson around 1 p.m. EST in the same look — however, she traded her slip-on shoes for white sneakers before heading to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility holding undocumented immigrant families suspected of crossing the border illegally.
At Arizona’s Tucson sector, which is responsible for covering 262 miles of the border, Trump participated in a roundtable discussion. “I know how dangerous and difficult your daily jobs are so I really appreciate all you do on the behalf of the country,” she said to the participants at the start. “I’m here to support you.”
She went on to ask how often the border patrol agents see children crossing alone without an adult. According to Michael Humphries from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations, the Arizona ports of entry have had 1,100 unaccompanied minors since Oct. 1, 2017. Trump was then shown an example, a picture of a young boy in the desert holding a bottle of soda and a note to which she responded, “It’s incredible that as young as 6 years old somebody would leave him. Wow, very sad.”
This visit comes just a week after the first lady traveled to McAllen, Texas, for a tour of Upbring New Hope Children’s Shelter, a housing facility for migrant children ages 12 to 17. Upon boarding her flight back to Washington, D.C., FLOTUS was photographed sporting a green jacket with graffiti-style writing on the back that read: “I really don’t care, do u?”
While her communications director, Stephanie Grisham, said there was no “hidden message” behind the article of clothing and that #ItsJustAJacket, President Trump later tweeted that the coat “refers to the Fake News Media. Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!”
