Melania Trump wore heels to plant a tree at the White House, and the internet is torn
No one expected Melania Trump to show up in full gardener gear to plant a tree. Sneakers would have been sensible enough.
But the first lady’s footwear of choice for tree planting is, instead, a pair of stilettos. And the internet can’t get over it.
Melania participated in a tree-planting ceremony on the south grounds of the White House Monday afternoon in conjunction with the White House Historical Association Presidential Sites Summit. The sapling came from the original Eisenhower oak near an East Wing garden established by former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, according to the Washington Post.
Trump stepped onto a plot of dirt wearing a light-pink sleeveless top tucked into a floral pleated midi skirt. Her outfit is definitely not appropriate for tree-planting, but it would have been slightly more acceptable had she worn flats. Alas, she didn’t. Instead, she teetered in light-pink stilettos — the red sole suggests they’re Louboutins. Viewers watched anxiously to see if she would sink into the grass — a common plight of heel-wearers — as she walked over to the tree and shoveled two scoops of dirt onto it.
“Did her high heels sink into the ground about 8 inches? I’m not being sarcastic. I truly don’t know how she walks on dirt,” one person pondered on Facebook.
Apparently, she doesn’t have those handy heel protectors, as she did start to sink while walking back onto the grass.
Was @FLOTUS in pink stilettos heels “planting” a tree on the White House grounds?? @CNN @BrookeBCNN

In 4 inch heels. Nothing makes sense anymore. #AlternativeGardening

Those heels, seriously. Come on @FLOTUS

By the look of those shoes, she wasn’t planning on doing any actual digging!

It's ok to slip on some boots with your dress for planting a tree, Melania, really it is. Thank you for replacing the tree.

One Twitter user was baffled by her wearing 4-inch heels while planting a tree, writing, “Nothing makes sense anymore,” while another noted that the first lady “is truly, deeply dedicated to her high heels.” Some wrote that she should have simply worn boots or flats for the occasion.
Others admired her ability to garden in heels. “Seriously, does she ever not look perfect? And how the heck is she balancing like that on loose dirt in heels?! She must have calves of stone lol #jealous,” someone wrote on Facebook. “So classy! I’m sure they’ll start criticizing her shoe choice ASAP. Real ladies can wear high heels for every occasion,” gushed another fan.
Whatever your take on her gardening shoes, they shouldn’t really come as a surprise. The last time a tree was planted at the White House, she wore heels. However, Melania wasn’t doing the digging that time.
People were just as surprised a year ago when Melania wore heels in Texas as she arrived to aid in Hurricane Harvey relief.
As one person suggested, she must be a “professional” heels-wearer.
