Melissa McCarthy's quotes on body image will make you love her even more
Melissa McCarthy has never really fit the typical Hollywood body type — and she couldn’t care less what you think about that. “I’ve never felt like I needed to change. I’ve always thought, ‘If you want somebody different, pick somebody else,’” she once said. And that seems to be working out pretty darn well for her. From Bridesmaids to Spy, she’s become one of the most bankable, and beloved, stars.
She looks happier and healthier than ever these days, but it’s always been what’s on the inside that’s made us love her most. Watch the video above for some of her best-ever quotes on body image.
She told Glamour, “As you start up the ladder in whatever field you’re in, you have to walk if people won’t give you what you’re worth. Once people don’t respect you enough to give you what you’re worth, they’re never going to.” And climb the ladder she did; earlier this year, CNBC reported that McCarthy was the third-highest-paid actress in Hollywood.
But it didn’t begin that way. McCarthy faced both personal and professional hardships on her way to the top. She started out as a comedian but found it difficult to land roles. Her first big break came in 2000 when she was cast as Sookie St. James in Gilmore Girls. Far from a lead, McCarthy instantly endeared herself to the show’s dedicated fans as Lorelai’s quirky BFF. Other steady gigs followed, but it was 2010’s sitcom Mike & Molly that kicked her career into high gear. With the addition of a scene-stealing part in the breakout hit Bridesmaids, McCarthy soon became one of Hollywood’s most in-demand stars.
Despite her massive success, McCarthy stays humble. “I think the best thing I could have done was struggle until I was 30. I always assume every job is my last. Twenty years of desperately trying to get a single job gets deep in your DNA,” she told Glamour. On top of her busy acting schedule, she’s also killing it offscreen. She and her husband, actor/writer Ben Falcone, share two daughters, and she continues to inspire women everywhere with her body-positive attitude, incredible career, and amazing determination.
