Meow! Gillian Anderson, 49, gets naked for PETA
Like many celebrities before her, Gillian Anderson would rather go naked than wear fur.
The X-Files actress, 49, stripped down to nada — save for some cat ears — for the animal rights organization. The exposing image, which had her hands strategically placed, appears in a new ad on a 70-foot billboard in NYC’s Penn Plaza.
The campaign coincides with New York Fashion Week in the hope that it will remind designers and fashionistas that fur is out of vogue. Labels Gucci and Michael Kors recently announced that they’ll no longer use dead animals in their creations. Other designers who previously stopped using fur include Ralph Lauren, Vivienne Westwood, and Giorgio Armani, who were reportedly influenced by a video of rabbit-fur farms narrated by Anderson.
“I found it liberating to use my body to make an important statement,” the actress says in a statement obtained by Yahoo Lifestyle. “People tend to look away from antifur ads showing mangled animals, but they’re drawn to PETA’s ‘naked’ campaign, and I’m proud to be a part of it.”
Anderson is in good company. P!nk and Taraji P. Henson both previously appeared in PETA ads timed for NYFW.
As for Anderson, this actually isn’t the first time she has stripped for a cause close to her heart. In 2013, she was also completely naked — with just an eel draped around her neck — to support Fishlove, a campaign highlighting the issue of collapsing fish stocks.
