Meryl Streep and Nicolas Ghesquière to Host the 'Time'-Themed, Louis Vuitton-Backed 2020 Met Gala
Here's hoping for a "timeless" red carpet.
After back-to-back, record-breaking hits about Catholicism and camp, Andrew Bolton hopes to lure even bigger crowds to the Metropolitan Museum of Art by exploring the concept of time and the way garments of the past and present influence one another.
"About Time: Fashion and Duration," set to open May 7, will feature 160 pieces of women's fashion from the last 150 years and beyond, The New York Times has revealed. The show will mark the Met's 150th anniversary and will be partly inspired by Virginia Woolf and the theories of the early-20th-century French philosopher Henri Bergson.
"I wanted to do an exhibition focused on the collection, but not a traditional masterworks exhibition," Bolton explained of the theme. "Something that connects to the zeitgeist, and what people are talking about now."
The star-studded Met Gala held the night before the exhibition opens will be co-chaired by Nicolas Ghesquière of Louis Vuitton (the brand is also underwriting the exhibition), Emma Stone, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep — who will be attending the ball for the first time — and Anna Wintour. Now we understand why Wintour teased the red carpet would be "timeless" at Vogue's "Forces of Fashion" conference last month.
