Meryl Streep Pours Herself a Drink While Singing Sondheim

There have been plenty of lovable celebrity drinking moments in quarantine—like Stanley Tucci's viral Negroni and Ina Garten's behemoth morning cocktail—but a pro like Meryl Streep just one-upped the rest by pairing her beverage with a musical number. The Oscar winner joined fellow actresses Christina Baranski and Audra McDonald in a drink-making (and -sipping) performance of "The Ladies Who Lunch" for composer Stephen Sondheim's 90th birthday concert. And it was all done via Zoom.

The trio sang alternate verses from Sondheim's 1970 musical, Company, while dramatically pouring their booze of choice. Baranski stuck to classic red wine, McDonald reached for some bourbon, and Streep shook up a martini, but later took a swig of Scotch right from the bottle. And despite all the sips and refills, no actress broke character or missed a single harmony. (The whiskey was no match for McDonald's high notes!) Our own boozy Zoom calls could never.

Streep, Baranski, and McDonald were just a few of the countless stars who gathered remotely to honor Sondheim for his milestone birthday. Others who paid tribute included Patti LuPone, Jake Gyllenhaal, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Benn Platt, Bernadette Peters, Sutton Foster, Josh Groban, Nathan Lane, and many more Broadway performers, according to Variety.
