Meryl Streep Seeks Revenge in New Netflix Trailer About the Panama Papers Scandal
Remember the infamous Panama Papers scandal? Well, director Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven) is turning the story into an action-packed movie, and it looks really, really good.
Netflix just dropped the star-studded trailer for The Laundromat, which is loosely based on Jake Bernstein’s 2017 book, Secrecy World: Inside the Panama Papers Investigation of Illicit Money Networks and the Global Elite.
The clip opens on a male voiceover, saying, “Simple truth of the world is that most games, for someone to win, well, someone has to lose.”
Cut to Ellen Martin (Meryl Streep), an innocent journalist who comes face-to-face with the sketchy dealings of a Panama City, Florida, law firm, Mossack Fonseca, after what was supposed to be a dream vacation.
She soon learns that the company’s two partners, Jürgen Mossack (Gary Oldman) and Ramón Fonseca (Antonio Banderas), are linked to an off-shore tax scheme. So, she makes it her mission to expose those involved, no matter the cost.
The Laundromat is based on the real-life Panama Papers scandal, which refers to the 11.5 million confidential documents that were leaked as a result of Mossack and Fonseca’s illegal transactions.
In addition to Streep, Oldman and Banderas, the movie also stars Sharon Stone, Alex Pettyfer, David Schwimmer, Will Forte, Jeffrey Wright, James Cromwell and Melissa Rauch.
The Laundromat will hit theaters on September 27 before heading to Netflix on October 18, where it will stay indefinitely. (#Bless)
