Met Gala throwback: 1998
The Met Gala countdown is officially on!
In two days time, the "Oscars of Fashion" will take place in New York, New York, with Hollywood's biggest stars and the world's most famous designers taking the red carpet. This year's theme, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, has been predicted to be the most controversial yet -- and knowing Anna Wintour, it's sure to make its mark on the fashion world.
In preparation for Monday's big night, we're throwing it back to what the Met Gala looked like 20 years ago. 1998 was quite the year for pop culture and politics alike. The Clinton/Monica Lewinsky scandal was just coming to light, There's Something About Mary hit the big screen and E.R. took the number one spot, again, as the most popular show on television, outranking Friends.
The late 90s was quite a time for fashion, as well. Sheer shawls were very much a thing, turtle necks and slip skirts made for high style, and green and pink were the hottest palate of the year. That year's red carpet was attended by the likes of Martha Stewart, Sarah Ferguson and Donald Trump. Trump attended for 9 years until Anna Wintour revealed last fall that she wouldn't invite the now-POTUS to her ball ever again.
