Meteorologist straps her son to her body while reporting weather forecast on live TV to raise awareness about 'baby wearing'
A Minneapolis meteorologist is sending a message to parents that has nothing to do with the weather, after wearing her nearly 2-year-old son on her back during a live broadcast.
Susie Martin, the director of operations and a meteorologist at Praedictix, a weather company, has caused quite a buzz on social media following her forecast on Friday. At the beginning of the broadcast, she turned to reveal an almost sleeping little boy, whom she referred jokingly to as her “handy assistant.” Turns out, she was wearing her son, to recognize International Baby Wearing Week. Now, she’s getting the opportunity to teach people more about it.
After Praedictix’s Facebook post of Martin’s weather report was viewed over 1 million times, Martin took to the weather service’s blog to answer some questions about baby wearing, and why she feels so passionate about it.
“It has been an invaluable tool for me as a mother, and helped me and my son bond during the early stages of infancy,” Martin wrote. “Not only that, but it was and still is incredibly liberating to be able to comfort my child whilst doing other tasks, which has helped me be a happier mom. To this day, it is a source of comfort and calmness for him.”
The peace the wrap gives the little boy is evident, as he stays asleep through the majority of the report. In fact, Friday’s broadcast wasn’t his first time on camera. Just last year, Martin’s son made his debut during one of his mom’s broadcasts on Spectrum News Kentucky.
Similarly, the video received a ton of attention from both people who support her promotion of baby wearing and those that decided to share their concerns about it.
“I don’t understand ‘baby wearing.’ Your baby is not an accessory or an article of clothing,” one person wrote in response to the 2017 video. While another more recently said, “It’s not appropriate to have your baby with you unless you’re there and not being paid to do your job that day. How can you concentrate on your job and be an effective employee when you have your baby with you who needs taking care of and will take priority over everything that happens.”
However, plenty of people have come to Martin’s defense, pointing out that the videos are proof that she can do her job just fine with her son strapped to her back. According to Martin’s blog post, her employers are supportive of it as well.
The network posted an additional video to its YouTube channel showing how Martin wraps her son before going on air.
“If I could inspire at least one parent to try baby wearing and if it helped them even a fraction as much as it has helped me and my family, it would be well worth it,” she wrote.
