This Miami Company Is Building Floating Luxury Homes That Can Withstand Hurricanes and Flooding

Sadly, with hurricanes becoming increasingly common and their strength more powerful, many coastal communities face unprecedented risk. So do the homes that are intended to keep residents safe. Most recently, Hurricane Florence has wreaked much devastation across the Carolinas and Virginia.

That's where startup Arkup wants to intervene — at least, for now, if you can drop a pretty penny — by building "livable yachts" (see the photos throughout; all images are renderings) that are made to withstand hurricanes, high winds, surge, and floods. The floating homes fend from the elements thanks to its' hydraulics' ability to lift the yacht 40 feet above the ocean floor. The homes also allow the resident to live ecologically with rainwater harvesting and solar power replacing utility bills.

And according to Business Insider, this futuristic lifestyle will be available soon. "After debuting the designs in 2017, the company teamed up with The Advantaged Yacht Charters & Sales, the oldest yacht charter company in Miami, to make the structures available for rent and purchase. In August, The Advantaged announced that it is accepting charter reservations online"

The Miami-based company describes their vision on their website as "[a] combination of research in renewable energies, technological innovation and cutting edge spatial design and style [that] situates your new home between the sea and the metropolis." Boats can be anchored in a marina or a bay and cruise through the ocean as desired. Business Insider reports each 4,350-square-foot luxury home retails for $5 million.

No word yet on mortgage assistance options, but here's to hoping these stunning abodes pave the way for more affordable models.
