Michelle Obama and Lady Gaga have something in common, and no, it’s not an appreciation for Beyoncé. Yesterday, the first lady stepped out with the president for a state dinner for Singapore’s prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, and his wife, Ho Ching. For the occasion, Mrs. Obama chose an ivory gown with a simple pleated detail at the bodice. She added a pair of Butani diamond earrings for some sparkle.

When we saw the look, we couldn’t help but think back to Lady Gaga’s gorgeous Oscars ensemble, which was in a similar color and had a similar sculpted construction.

Turns out, both dresses were the work of designer Brandon Maxwell, the man behind Gaga’s makeover, which took the pop singer’s look into stylish sophistication, in contrast to the wackier sartorial choices she made earlier in her career.

During her time in the White House, Michelle Obama has given shine to a number of little-known American designers, and it looks as if she won’t be stopping, even though her days in those hallowed halls are (sadly) coming to an end.
