Michelle Obama Dazzles in Sergio Hudson Leather Look at ‘American Symphony’ Premiere
Michelle Obama arrived on the red carpet for the New Orleans premiere of “American Symphony” on Thursday wearing a chocolate brown ensemble, including a leather coat, leather corset top, matching trousers and statement belt from Sergio Hudson.
Obama’s look was from Sergio Hudson’s spring 2024 collection, which featured many of the designer’s usual motifs, including power suits, vibrant colors and statement shoulder pads.

Obama is credited with helping to catapult Hudson’s career. At the 2021 inauguration of President Joe Biden, she attended wearing a burgundy coat with a matching sweater, wide-leg tailored trousers and a belt from the designer’s label. That same evening, Vice President Kamala Harris, who has also been considered a boon to the young designer’s career, wore a custom sequin dress and black coat from the brand. Both looks from the former first lady and the current vice president caused Sergio Hudson’s website to crash three times.
The former first lady surprised Grammy winner Jon Batiste with her appearance at “American Symphony.” The film is a documentary that follow Batiste and his life partner, author Suleika Jaouad, as the musician is working on composing a symphony. Matthew Heineman directed the film, and it was produced by Michelle and Barack Obama’s production company, Higher Ground Productions.
For the premiere, Batiste wore a burgundy Louis Vuitton ensemble, including an LV monogram print coat, a logo T-shirt and matching trousers.
Obama’s appearance for “American Symphony” comes just a few weeks after she attended the funeral of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, who passed away at the age of 96 on Nov. 19. All five living women who have been first ladies, including Obama, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Melania Trump and Jill Biden, attended the funeral. Trump made headlines for being the only one of the first ladies who didn’t wear all-black.
