Michelle Obama Honors George H.W. Bush in Moving Instagram Post
Although their politics often differ widely, it's long been tradition for former presidents to get along. Not only does it send a bipartisan message, but leaders of the executive branch share a unique kinship: there are only a handful of living people who know the triumphs, struggles, and burdens of serving in the Oval Office.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama reminded us of that this weekend with a touching Instagram post in honor of the late George H.W. Bush, who passed away this past Friday. Obama shared a photo of Bush giving her a kiss on the cheek from his wheelchair, and added a touching comment.

"As a public servant, father, and grandfather, President George H.W. Bush was an extraordinary example for us all," she wrote. "His spirit of service and decency will be missed by many, including our family. I hope his memory will be a guiding light for our country and those around the world."
Michelle Obama also shared that she would be attending the 41st president's funeral-even though it meant cancelling tour dates for her new memoir, Becoming. She posted the news on Twitter, along with an apology to those planning to attend her cancelled events.
It’s important to me to join the Bush family in celebrating President George H.W. Bush’s exemplary life. This will unfortunately preclude my visits to Paris and Berlin. I’ve been deeply touched by the enthusiasm for my memoir, and I’m working to reschedule my trip for next year.

"I'm working to reschedule my trip for next year, she added. "I hope readers and ticket holders will understand my decision regarding my desire to attend President Bush’s funeral, and join me in paying tribute to him and his tremendous contributions to our world."
Michelle Obama is also a friend of George H.W. Bush's son, George W. Bush. Due to the protocol for former presidents, they are always seated together at official events. "He's my partner in crime at every major thing where all the 'formers' gather," Obama told Today. "So we're together all the time... I love him to death. He's a wonderful man, he's a funny man."
The former First Lady is well aware of what her friendship with George W. Bush means for the public. "Party doesn't separate us, color, gender, those kinds of things don't separate us," she said. "If we're the adults and the leaders in the room and we're not showing that level of decency, we cannot expect our children to do the same ... I think about the next generation, every single time."
