Michelle Obama Recounts "Scary" Time at Princeton with College Throwback Photo
Does he have the room he wants, the closet he wants? No, no, no. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] I wake up when I wanna wake up. I got myself all gussied up to come here. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] I'm sorry. [LAUGH] He's got the smallest room for his office and Sasha actually killed in this house. She has like this two room suite it's all decked out. [MUSIC] She's got a room up In the attic somewhere. I didn't know that. [LAUGH]. She's away at college. You don't waste rooms on college kids. No. [LAUGH] [BLANK_AUDIO]
While it's hard to imagine Michelle Obama decorating a dorm or cramming for final exams, turns out she was once a regular Princeton University student studying sociology and African American studies. First Ladies, they're just like us!
Obama recently took a trip down memory lane via Instagram, sharing a snap of herself between classes. Clad in a jean jacket with school bag slung over her shoulder, she looks like modern day #OutfitInspo. But in the caption, she got candid.
"This is me at Princeton in the early 1980s," she writes. "I know that being a first-generation college student can be scary, because it was scary for me."
"I was black and from a working-class neighborhood in Chicago, while Princeton’s student body was generally white and well-to-do," she continued. "I’d never stood out in a crowd or a classroom because of the color of my skin before. But I found close friends and a mentor who gave me the confidence to be myself. Going to college is hard work, but every day I meet people whose lives have been profoundly changed by education, just as mine was. My advice to students is to be brave and stay with it. Congratulations to the Class of 2018! #ReachHigher."
"Reach Higher" is more than just a hashtag, though. It's a promise from Obama herself, because it refers to a White House program she created in 2014 to encourage American students to commit to higher education.
"In today's economy, a high school diploma just isn't enough," the program's page reads. "Students have to reach higher, which is why the First Lady is working to rally the country around the President's "North Star" goal—that by 2020, America will once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world."
In case it isn't obvious, Obama's been in a particularly reflective mood lately. Who could blame her though? She's got a memoir coming out on November 13 called Becoming, so in advance, she's sharing more of her life with her large following.
