Mickey Mouse is Now Public Domain

Mickey Mouse has been public domain for less than 24 hours and there’s already been a movie announced starring Disney’s iconic mascot.

The debut trailer for upcoming indie horror film, Mickey Mouse's Trap, released on New Years Day, with a release date of March 2024.

The reason media is now able to use Mickey’s likeness without penalty is because the copyright on the character has elapsed. In United States law, copyright lasts no longer than 95 years, meaning Mickey is intellectual property anyone can use.

There are a few caveats, however. The copyright is only for the earliest incarnation of Mickey, as seen in 1928 short film Steamboat Willie. Also, media featuring Mickey must come with clear disclaimers.

The one for Mickey Mouse's Trap reads:

'DISCLAIMER: THIS IS NOT NOT A DISNEY FILM OR PRODUCTION. IT IS NOT TO AFFILIATED OR ENDORSED BY DISNEY IN ANY WAY. This film makes use of Public domain Steam Boat Willie Mickey Mouse only.’

In Mickey Mouse's Trap, a group of friends trapped in an amusement park attempt to survive while a demented killer dressed as Mickey Mouse stalks them. Check out the trailer below.
