A Midcentury Home Set on a Renowned California Golf Course Lists for $5.6 Million
Hollywood icons from Bob Hope to Marilyn Monroe famously flocked to the desert oasis that is Palm Springs, back in their heyday. Just a few miles down the road, in the resort town of Rancho Mirage, there was another hotbed of celebs around the Tamarisk Country Club. Danny Kaye and Jack Benny were among the club’s original investors; Frank Sinatra lived in a walled compound along the 17th fairway; and several of his famous pals, including Sammy Davis Jr., had homes around the corner. Today, those daydreaming of a foothold in the same area where the Rat Pack flourished in the desert heat might find a new listing along the 13th fairway of the Tamarisk Country Club golf course a good place to start.
The refurbished mid-century abode at 70889 Tamarisk Lane would make a comfortable full-time home or a stylish vacation retreat for city slickers or snowbirds. The four-bedroom home was built in 1959 by architect Val Powelson and later restored by the design-build firm Studio Veren. Four-and-a-half baths are spread out among its ensuite rooms for privacy, but entertaining is at the heart of the home that is going for $5.6 million.

This might not seem like the case from the minimalistic exterior, which features a boxy design highlighted by sharp lines and plain-white paint. But from the entryway, its fully-furnished interiors provide a welcoming ambience thanks to the many earthy elements like wood finishing, neutral colors, rich textures, and a groovy, freestanding fireplace. To the right of the entrance sits a wet bar in front of a cozy den. The kitchen to the left features a money-green paint job, an oversized island, a custom walk-in pantry, modern appliances, and a quaint seating area for breakfast banter.
Elsewhere, the primary bedroom provides stunning mountain views over the lush, manicured greens of the golf course. Beige is the soothing color of choice in the light-filled space, which features floor-to-ceiling windows and a sliding glass door that leads to a private covered patio. Its ensuite bathroom has custom-integrated marble sinks and mirrors, plus a glass-enclosed shower, an electronic bidet, and heated floors. Other standout amenities in the primary suite include a Sonos sound system, an outdoor shower garden, and a walk-in closet with a built-in steamer/sanitizer.
Resort-like outdoor spaces are the icing on the cake. A uniquely shaped pool and spa anchor the backyard, alongside a covered dining set-up for 10 and two lounge areas with fire pits. The verdant grounds, hidden from the golf course behind a cactus grove, offer breathtaking views of the nearby mountains. In addition to the cactus barrier, the gated home is equipped with a wired camera system, Control4 Home automation, and surround sound throughout.
