Photographic Proof That Ellen and Portia Are the Perfect Match
It’s been 10 years since Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi (legally Portia Lee James DeGeneres) tied the knot. And ever since, the two have been tugging at pretty much everyone's heartstrings with photos of their family, complete with countless pets and trips to beautiful destinations.
Last August, to celebrate Ellen’s 60th birthday, Portia appeared on her wife’s show to present Ellen with the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in Rwanda (casual, right?), a gift Portia thought up by reflecting on the couple’s 10 years of conversation and shared passions. Ellen called the gift proof of how much her wife understands her and quoted Portia’s words from their wedding day: "It’s good to be loved, it’s profound to be understood." (*Wipes tears*)
From the outside looking in, Portia and Ellen seem like the perfect match-focused on one another, dedicated, and loving-who not only debunk the occasional divorce rumor when needed, but totally laugh it off.
Still, nothing is every really like it seems, Jane Greer, PhD, author of What About Me? Stop Selfishness From Ruining Your Relationship, is here to analyze the couple’s body language.
1) Where one goes the other does, too.
"They're clearly into each other based on the way their bodies are turned into one another," says Greer. Despite walking forward, their attention is on each other and getting where they’re headed as a unit. And as if that wasn’t sweet enough, there’s the tilt of Portia’s head, which signals she’s listening attentively to her wife. Plus, the fact that they’re walking in step means they have similar goals.
2) Portia knows how to say "I love you" without saying a word.
"I’ve got you covered." That’s what Greer says Portia is expressing with her arms around Ellen. Portia must have known she was delivering this message loud and clear, since she didn’t even caption the sweet pic when she posted it on Instagram.
3) They're the epitome of "No, I love you more."
At the Finding Dory premiere, Ellen and Portia walked the blue carpet together, and though they looked stunning from the front, it was this view of their backs that gave Greer insight into their relationship:
"An embrace like this is a clear sign of their mutual affection," she said. Though they might not be walking in-step in this moment, their heads are turned toward the same direction. Oh, and their arms are wrapped around the other with a familiarity that can only mean embracing is far from foreign for this couple.
4) Ellen only has eyes for Portia.
Ellen’s got two 2016 People’s Choice Awards in her hands, but still, her eyes are on Portia. If that doesn’t convince you this is a solid marriage, nothing will. Greer calls this body language a statement that nothing means more to Ellen than Portia and their relationship. Even with the success of her talk show, her Presidential Medal of Freedom, and her many business ventures, Greer’s convinced Ellen’s first priority is her family.
5) And Portia is here for EVERYTHING about Ellen.
Portia may be extending her hand in an effort to get Ellen to head into the award show they’re going to (fair), but Portia’s face says she’s got all the patience in the world when it comes to Ellen. Her big smile while Ellen plays it up for the cameras proves she’s still in looove with Ellen’s humor and expects nothing less from her wife. Even when their priorities aren’t perfectly in sync, Portia’s there to support Ellen.
6) Ellen's got Portia's back.
And Ellen’s there for Portia, too, says Greer. "Ellen is literally supporting Portia by holding up her dress," she explains. But it’s how comfortably Portia leans on Ellen that proves how reliable she is. There’s no doubt in Portia's mind that her partner is and always will be there for her.
7) They couldn't get any closer if they tried (and they do).
Showing the world they’re totally on the same page by standing cheek-to-cheek and heart-to-heart, Ellen and Portia are speaking volumes with this touchy body language. Both of them are comfortable with the closeness. In fact, they seem to be inviting it from the other. And then there are Ellen’s hands holding Portia to her, as if it were possible to get their bodies any closer together. I mean, they can't, but shout-out to the couple for giving it a shot.
8) There's no shame in their handsy game.
Aaaaand here’s another embrace for the win.
According to Greer, "love is in the air, and these two continue to spread it" by just being near each other. And though she can’t hug Ellen back, Portia grips onto her wife’s hands which proves the love is 100-percent reciprocated.
9) They make love look easy.
This photo, taken waaay back in 2008, the year these two got married, is showing ALL the love. Smiles aside, Greer is drawn to the ease with which Ellen and Portia love each other. Their arms are draped on each other as if to say, "yeah, where else would they be?" Plus, their heads are touching, which shows they have a mind connection that complements the physical one.
