Miley Cyrus's New Song 'Nothing Breaks Like a Heart' Is Here
After much teasing, Miley Cyrus released the very first single of her new music era tonight at 7 p.m., "Nothing Breaks Like a Heart." She and Mark Ronson wrote the song together, which poetically explores heartbreak and resilience. The music video, meanwhile, touches on gun culture and the political culture we're in:
The personal ties lyrically seem limited. In the first verse, Cyrus alludes to a "burning house," just weeks after her and her fiancé Liam Hemsworth's Malibu estate burned down in the Woolsey Fire. Cyrus and Hemworth have visibly spent time together in Tennessee ("Remember what you said to me?/We're drunk in love in Tennessee/And I'll hold it, we both know it"). But beyond that, Cyrus doesn't seem to be referencing any recent romantic heartbreak, at least that has been made public.
Cyrus has been engaged to Hemsworth for over a year, and a source told Entertainment Tonight earlier this week that "Miley and Liam are totally in love and are so happy living together."
Still, the lyrics are powerful and offer a glimpse of Cyrus's songwriting now. Here, the verses via Genius:
Intro:
This world can hurt you, it cuts you deep and leaves a scar
Things fall apart, but nothing breaks like a heart, nothing breaks like a heart.
Verse 1:
I heard you on the phone last night
We live and die by pretty lies, you know it. We both know it.
These silver bullet cigarettes, this burning house
There's nothing left, it's smoking, but we both know it
We got all night to fall in love
But just like that we fall apart, we're broken, we're broken
Pre-Chorus:
Nothing, nothing, nothing gon' save us now
Chorus:
This broken silence, my thunder crashing in the dark
Crashing in the dark
And this broken record, spinning in circles
In the bars, spin 'round in the bars
This world can hurt you, it cuts you deep and leaves a scar
Things fall apart, but nothing breaks like a heart, ooh
Nothing breaks like a heart, nothing breaks like a heart
Verse 2:
We'll leave each other cold as ice
And high and dry, the desert wind it's blowing, it's blowing
Remember what you said to me?
We're drunk in love in Tennessee
And I'll hold it, we both know it
Pre-Chorus:
Nothing, nothing, nothing gon' save us now
Nothing, nothing, nothing gon' save us now
Chorus:
This broken silence, my thunder crashing in the dark
Crash in the dark
And this broken record, spinning in circles
In the bars, spin 'round in the bars
This road can't hurt you, it cuts you deep and leaves a scar
Things fall apart, but nothing breaks like a heart, ooh
Nothing breaks like a heart, nothing breaks like a heart, ooh
Nothing breaks like a heart
Bridge:
My heart, my heart
My heart, my heart
Chorus:
This broken silence, my thunder crashing in the dark
Crash in the dark
And this broken record, spinning in circles
In the bars, spin 'round in the bars
This world can hurt you, it cuts you deep and leaves a scar
Things fall apart, but nothing breaks like a heart, ooh
Nothing breaks like a heart, nothing breaks like a heart
Nothing breaks like a heart
