"Milk Bath" Photography Is Our New Favorite Baby Photography Trend
Scrolling through Facebook today, your eyes probably glazed over as you passed by another maternity or newborn photo session in your newsfeed. Don't get us wrong-we're happy for all the moms and moms-to-be out there!-but it's easy to get a little tired, seeing everyone recreate similar photos.
That's why our interest was piqued when we came across the "milk baby photography" trend on Pinterest. These surreal photos focus on helping moms-to-be embrace the miracle of life they're carrying.
"A milk bath is different from a traditional maternity shoot because instead of perfecting poses, you are simply capturing a mommy relaxed and enjoying those last few days of this sweet little boy being in the womb," explained photographer Brittany Gidley to WomansDay.com.
Before her first milk bath session, Brittany admits that she was nervous shooting in the bathroom would quickly get awkward-but she quickly got over that feeling after seeing how great it turns out on camera. "After a little research, I realized that beyond looking purely gorgeous in images, milk has numerous benefits to the skin that pregnant mommies can really benefit from," Brittany explained. "So, we went for it. And as you can see from the stunning images we produced... that, my friends, makes it all worth it. "
To create these photos, the subject has to recline in a bathtub filled with water, and then milk is added to get the right color. (Brittany even uses coffee creamer to get the opacity just right.) Flowers and foliage are usually spread throughout the tub, to add pops of beautiful color.
"I love the calm and organic look shown in milk bath photography," explained Tiffany Burke, who has been credited as the first person to start this trend. "The photos show a very feminine, ethereal wait before a baby is born. I'm really drawn to color design and the way a photo makes you feel when you see the images. An expecting mother is strikingly beautiful and this felt like an artistic way to showcase that." According to Tiffany, new moms will sometimes even come back with their newborns to do a second session.
